Knight
Source: Player’s Handbook (variant of Noble)
You are a knight — a minor noble who has earned a special rank in service to a higher authority. Your title carries weight, and commoners and merchants defer to you. You have sworn fealty to a liege or order.
Proficiencies & Equipment
| Feature | Detail |
|---|---|
| Skill Proficiencies | History, Persuasion |

Feature: Retainers
You have the service of three retainers loyal to your family. These retainers can be attendants or messengers.
- They are commoners who can perform mundane tasks for you.
- They do not fight for you, will not follow you into obviously dangerous areas (such as dungeons), and will leave if they are frequently endangered or abused.
- If one is killed or lost, you can replace them by spending time in a settlement.
Notes
- Knight is a variant of the Noble background. The key difference is that Noble gets the Position of Privilege feature (welcome in high society, common folk accommodate you, audience with local nobles), while Knight gets Retainers instead.
- A knight’s authority comes from service and duty rather than birth. You may have been knighted for valor, service to a lord, or membership in a military order.
- The Gaming Set proficiency is from Noble — common choices: dice set, dragonchess set, playing card set, three-dragon ante set.
